Meeting Aarti Saxena, founder of Samvedna, it is evident that her passion and dedication towards women‘s empowerment is real, and so inspiring, that we want to dedicate this post to her and all the women who find the courage to step out of limiting social paradigms and rigid patriarchal dynamics. Although the overall situation of women in Indian society has improved, they still tend to get marginalised and suppressed in their individuality and creative powers. Especially when coming from a financially disadvantaged background, women rarely get opportunities to actively participate in social, political and economic matters.
Samvedna – Connecting Souls is an initiative to empower local women with education, professional training and work opportunities to facilitate their independence, self-respect and dignity. The organisation was established in Rishikesh in 2014 by Aarti Saxena and Deepak Barthwal.
Women who are faced with social discrimination keep experiencing frustration, depression and failure. Samvedna aims at alleviating this issue by inspiring women into education and training, offering knowledge and support in skill development. This uplifts not only the women themselves, but also their families, and society at large. Samvedna runs training programs for women to make them economically independent – and the focus here is on self-employment. This way, women become self-reliant and raise the living standard of their children and families.
Main Activities:
+ Dedication to social and economic upliftment of rural women;
+ Mental and emotional support;
+ Training programs (computer & language education);
+ Education in hygiene
+ Train women in dress designing, tailoring, stitching, embroidery;
+ Art education (music, dance);
+ Enabling women to become earning members of their house.
+ Motivate women to work with enthusiasm, empathy and self-confidence;
+ Offer continuous improvement and learning;
+ Provide employment to rural women (e.g. as dress designer or tailor);
Part of Samvedna is "Samvedna Handmade", the creative space and souvenir shop in Tapovan. Here you can buy products hand-made by local women. The women design, stitch, craft and manufacture with devotion and the produced items – dresses, embroidery and saree work, female hygiene products and handicrafts – are made available for purchase.
Feel free to visit the women in the workshop, have a chat and feel free to contribute to their empowerment. There are many people all around the world who are eager to support a good cause, but may don’t know how to start. To help Samvedna, you can buy or order their products, come and share your expertise with them by holding a workshop or talk. For enquiries (and donations), contact Aarti Ji.
