Aishwarya Bailwal is a fashion designer from Rishikesh and we are delighted to have found her. She belongs to the younger generation of people who appreciate India‘s culture, and in her case it is the love of traditional Indian women‘s clothing – Sarees, Lehengas, Tunics, Anarkali Suits and, of course, Indian Bridal wear.

Aishwarya opened her own studio-store in 2015, and the space brims of beautiful fabrics from Brocade Silk, Banarasi Silk, Handloom Khadi, hand-embroidered Fabrics, Georgette and Velvet to Blockprint Cotton as well as lighter neutral textiles.

The focus of her work is on Classic Indian dresses, including ethnic styles and Indo-Western fusion. Her work is absolutely stunning and lovingly curated. With a well trained eye for detail and fabulous ideas, Aishwarya uplifts every garment with a special touch.

With a mother who not only is a gifted vedic astrologer but also founded a fashion design institute in Rishikesh, training 100s of students, Aishwarya discovered textiles and tailoring early on in her childhood. What started off as casual pastime, playing with fabrics, borders and buttons, turned into the discovery of her fashion designing and tailoring talent. And so she started creating clothes for friends already at school from class 9.

Clothing in India is dependent upon the geography, climate and cultural traditions of the people of each region of the continent. Women‘s clothing varies widely and is closely associated to local customs, needs and family background.

A Saree is THE female garment in India, worn by women of all ages. It is draped over the body in various styles and one of the most graceful clothing items for women. It can be a heirloom passed down through generations, or a purely functional garment worn everyday.

Clothes are an integral part of our lives and usually we wear dresses as per our temperament and mood, or as per occasion. Would you ever consider the spiritual benefits or detriments of your clothes? Already just a little bit of research reveals fascinating insights.

According to one of Sanatan Sanstha’s texts for example, Hindu Dharma gives extreme importance to why a woman should wear a Saree and explains it as spiritually beneficial clothing. As per the scriptures, sattvic clothes conserve our spiritual energy. „When an individual wears clothes, the friction caused by the subtle-contact of the garment with the body attracts waves from the atmosphere towards the individual which, aided by the clothes, enter the subtle-sheaths and the body of the individual.“ – reference: Nishad Deshmukh, 18 June 2007

„Wearing a saree results in spiritual healing by reducing the distressing energy. By wearing a saree, the woman imbibes Chaitanya and sattvikta in the environment which are retained in a circular (note: spiral) form. Though the saris made from synthetic yarn are comfortable to wear, they have less ability to absorb sattvikta and Chaitanya. Conversely, saris made from natural fibres, such as cotton and silk yarns, have a greater ability to absorb sattvikta and Chaitanya.“

Talking about spirituality and Indian traditions leads us to another of Aishwarya‘s ventures, namely the actual designing of textiles. Saree textile design is one of her favourite disciplines, both weaving and block printing. She finds inspiration in nature as well as Indian architecture, above all temple architecture.

In her store Aishwarya has an impressive collection of Sarees she designed herself. One pattern and colour combination is more beautiful than the next. Same goes for Agnipadma‘s accessories. To ease your choices, the enthusiastic studio team will be delighted to share their knowledge and recommendations.

If Aishwarya's schedule permits, she shares her knowledge and teaches. For example, under the government‘s program PMKVY, which offers support of less priviledged in form of schooling and skill development, she visited Dehradun prison and trained men and women in tailoring. So when they leave and go back home, they have a foundation to start a new life chapter, able to provide for themselves.
