I have noticed the Meeram Ganga for the first time by chance when visiting the neighbouring garden-nursery at Triveni Ghat. It is a beautiful, charming hotel which just recently opened.
Its contemporary architecture and bohemian aesthetics immediately conveyed to me that this is a well-curated place whose owners appreciate arts and crafts.
And indeed, when I spoke to founder and director Sohaniji, I learned she not only studied fine arts & fashion in Delhi and Pune, but also worked with an Indian handicraft export company in the past.
Stepping into the hotel reception, one gets welcomed by courteous helpful staff and a very pleasant, warm and friendly atmosphere. The interior features light, natural and soothing colours with just a pop of vibrant colours here and there. It is spaceous and stylish, yet not overstyled. Simple shapes and clear lines allow the classy textiles like linen, cotton and velvet to stand out. Exquisite materials such as wood, glass, stone and marble from Rajasthan are harmoniously combined with each other, and mix well with the generous placement of indoor palm trees and plants.
The property belongs to Sohaniji’s family and was handed down from her great grandfather. The building is almost 100 years old and was completely refurbished this year, making impressively smart use of space and light.
In fact, the whole idea here is about staying connected to nature – staying grounded no matter how much you spiritually evolve. The large glass front, permitting ample of daylight into the building, is emblematic for bringing the outside inside and be in sync with nature, your own self as well as the environment.
Sohaniji is well travelled and also had a longer sojourn abroad. However, she always found Rishikesh very special and the land kept pulling her back. She is an accomplished artist and painter, and the Meeram Ganga is a venture which allows her to express her creative skills, love of beauty and nature, her professional knowledge and expertise as well as her joy in welcoming travelers from India and other countries.
Centrally located yet tucked away from the market’s hustle and bustle, with 8 tastefully decorated double bedrooms, the Meeram Ganga is deliberately kept petite to maintain the spirit of a homestay and boutique hotel.
The food is homecooked and delicious. And the roof terrace with stunning views of Ganga, Triveni Ghat and the Himalayan hills offers a splendid recreation zone for guests. Room facilities include air conditioning / heating, free toiletries, flat-screen tv and electric kettle. Common areas comprise a library, shrine, shared kitchen, 24-hour security, CCTV in common areas as well as CCTV outside the property.
