Thursdays are fantastic to visit Rishikesh market. But not to go shopping! Usually all shops are closed that day. It is the perfect day for an early morning or afternoon stroll, and learn more about our city's history and have a proper look at its buildings.

Exactly because on Thursdays all commercial buzz comes to a halt, you can experience a serenity in the ghat area that allows to sense the atmosphere of ancient times.

One of the most beautiful and elegant buildings is near Triveni Ghat, in Nirmal Marg. In fact, the property belongs to Nirmal Ashram.

The architecture is not Rajasthani as some visitors might think, but old Lahori (Punjabi) style.

The founder of Nirmal Ashram was Sriman Mahant Buddha Singh Ji who was a great administrator, a scholar of shastras and an excellent orator. He was a follower of Sri Guru Nanak Dev and established the ashram in 1903 with the motive of providing boarding and lodging facilities to the saints and sadhus.

The head of Nirmal Ashram Rishikesh is Mahant Ram Singh ji Maharaj, a source of inspiration and embodiment of kindness. He travels extensively in India and abroad to spread the knowledge about the divine and truth.

Although the main branch is in Haridwar, the ashram team and Nirmal community is very active here in Rishikesh too. They work to serve society and have various public institutions under their umbrella. Initiatives include public hospitals, schools, an orphanage and old people's home as well as vocational education and a variety of publications.
